I Turned Down a Commission
It’s true. In fact I have declined to accept many commissions over the years. It sounds crazy but let me explain.
Sometime as an artist you have to be honest with yourself and realize that just because a potential client wants to hire you, the job might not be right for you. When a client ask me to create a corset, I carefully consider the request. The questions I ask myself are:
- Am I confident that I can exceed the client’s expectations for the finished corset?
- Would this work be an asset to my portfolio?
- Is the commission in keeping with Wilde Hunt Corsetry’s aesthetic?
My goal with my work for Wilde Hunt Corsetry is to create exceptional custom corsets with a beautiful, luxe, couture-style aesthetic. If I take a job that does not fit these goals, then I am not serving anyone’s best interests! Now, the majority of the commission requests I receive are very much the type of work I enjoy and are well aligned to my goals and skills, but occasionally I get one that just isn’t suited to me. Examples of this would be corsets intended for an extreme fetish lifestyle, corsets for individuals who are under 18 years old, or corsets that are copies of existing work. None of these situations inspire me or serve the aesthetic that I am working hard to create.
