Day of the Dead Corset

I just realized that I never blogged about these electrically lit costumes I created for a Dia de los Muertos celebration last year! Every year, in Columbus, Ohio, artist Kat Marie Moya hold a fabulous celebration of life inspired by the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos called Por Vida. It’s a great time filled with art, music, friends, and memories. I wanted to make something very vibrant, colorful, and slightly comical because Dia de los Muertos is not a sad event. It is, after all,  a celebration!  On this day we take the time to honor the people we love who have passed as well as reflect on the absurdity and humor of this journey we call “life”.

For these costumes I decided to add electrical lights to get the maximum impact and color. The Day of the Dead Corset is made of black patent leather with hand cut appliques rendered in high shine silver metallic leather, and it is also piped with bright purple electrical lighting. You can watch a video of this corset in action here.
Well El Dia de los Muertos is fast approaching us again! This year I will exhibiting one of my works The Anatomist Corset at Por Vida, along side the works of many wonderful artists. If you are at all able to attend, I highly recommend it!

Do you have unique traditions for remembering your loved ones? I’d love to hear about them in the comments below!
Want more Dia de los Muertos ?! Here you go!
  • -A visually stunning yearly celebration in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Be sure to look at their gallery, it is so beautiful – it gave me chills!
  •  -666Photography created a rich series of images depicting women in corsets with sugar skull makeup. They’re the first 4 images in the gallery. You can even purchase a print of them!
  • -Ever wanted to make your own Sugar Skulls? Charming! <3
  • -While they are traditional for Dia de los Muertos, Etsy seller AyMujer! creates intricately cut papel picado banners for any celebration. Imagine how beautiful her custom wedding ones would be at a reception!

Cheers!
